(04/15/09) Prescription Solutions’ Trevor Goodwin, Quality Auditor, Developer of “Why Pink,” is Presented UnitedHealth Group Living the Mission Award
On April 14, in a presentation at the UnitedHealth Group office in Overland Park, Kan., Trevor Goodwin, quality auditor for Prescription Solutions, was awarded the latest UnitedHealth Group Living the Mission award. The award was presented to Goodwin by Bill Munsell, executive vice president, UnitedHealth Group and chief executive officer, Enterprise Services Group; Jackie Kosecoff, chief executive officer, Prescription Solutions; Dave Sparkman, chief administrative officer for Enterprise Services Group; and Susan Deal, senior human capital partner for Prescription Solutions.
It was a beautiful spring day in Kansas City, Mo., last April. Trevor Goodwin, an accomplished photographer, and his family were enjoying the day when a simple yet stunning image caught his creative eye. “My family and I were around a water fountain, which was surrounded by hundreds of gorgeous soft pink tulips just opening in the warming weather,” reflects Goodwin. Immediately struck with inspiration, Goodwin began photographing the tulips. “These tulips were so stunning in their simplicity. I knew I had to capture them and share them. ‘Why Pink’ was born that day.”
A Mission, a Way of Life
Helping people live healthier lives isn’t just UnitedHealth Group’s mission; it’s Trevor Goodwin’s way of life. Last January, as our country faced serious economic turbulence, Goodwin and his wife Amy reflected on their life and were grateful for the people who had offered them a hand when they needed it most. Together the Goodwin family made a commitment to give back to their community in a meaningful way. After seeing the pink tulips, Goodwin had an idea to use black and white photography, add a splash of pink, and use the images to capture a beautiful softness to breast cancer.
Goodwin’s “Why Pink” campaign photographs women touched by breast cancer. At least 50 percent of the sale of the photo sessions and portrait sales go directly to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). In 2008, the Goodwin’s raised nearly $5,000 for NBCF, which provided more than 22,000 free mammograms for underinsured women in America last year.
Though Goodwin is humble and soft-spoken, his charitable works are making noise. Last October, Goodwin and his wife were interviewed by Kansas City Fox news anchor Laura Thornquist for an on-air news segment that gave recognition to the Goodwin’s cause and created a buzz around UnitedHealth Group.
Inspiring Values and Action
“Trevor is well-known for his efforts in bringing breast cancer awareness to people in the Kansas City area and throughout Prescription Solutions, but his integrity, quality, innovation, diversity and social responsibility have touched us all, too,” noted a co-worker. “He’s got a family, a home business, his work at UnitedHealth Group is exemplary, and he’s very active in numerous charities. He’s simply inspiring to everyone who meets him.”
As a quality auditor, Goodwin is committed to excellence for our clients, their members, fellow employees and the community. In his general duties in the 3D Learning area, he completes audits ensuring our pharmacy benefit plans work as well as possible. He takes this job to heart with a clear knowledge of the customer and what they need. As part of UnitedHealth Group, it is important Prescription Solutions provides client plan satisfaction with as few member complaints as possible. Goodwin guarantees Prescription Solutions is able to address issues swiftly and effectively. Furthermore, he uses the latest data from Prescription Solutions and UnitedHealth Group’s science and client services areas to perform audits.
Goodwin’s current and previous managers also remark on his innovation. After his promotion and transfer to his new team several weeks ago, he created a process flowchart for his new supervisor with ideas on how his team could do their work more efficiently. Using his knowledge of his previous team, and their efforts to build the new process, the flowchart is now in use and working quite well. Goodwin can be counted on for continuous innovation to find new ways to help his fellow employees, clients and their members and the community at large.
“UnitedHealth Group is the most diverse company I have worked for, from the bottom of the organization to the top. The company also excels in innovation, quality and integrity,” said Goodwin, “but diversity is a huge strong point for the organization.”
Giving Back with Helping Hands
Social responsibility is near to Goodwin’s heart. “It may be defined as responsibility, but that definition may give the impression that individuals are required to do something or give something. I don’t like to look at it that way, no one is required to help,” said Goodwin. “Everyone falls on hard times and needs a hand at some point in their lives. I know I have, and I’m thankful for all the helping hands that helped me reach this point.
“Social responsibility is about returning the favor for me and my family,” added Goodwin. “I am very fortunate to be employed by such a stable organization, and there are other things my family is thankful for, which others do not have access to. There are many people now who are not as fortunate as we all are, so let’s give them a hand.”
UnitedHealth Group Teamwork
Goodwin is quick to recognize his UnitedHealth Group co-workers. “I have been in the same department for three years, and we are a very close group. We have met each others families, gotten together outside of work and have a pretty close bond. We work well together and can accomplish any task we are given. I’m proud of the relationships we have with each other. My wife and kids know most of the people I work with, so they are much more than just co-workers.”
“UnitedHealth Group is a great organization to work for,” added Goodwin. “I have really been pleased by all the things we do as an organization to improve the community and the health care system.”
When Goodwin learned that he was to receive the Living the Mission Award, “I was surprised; more like shocked!” said Goodwin. “This is something I would have never expected. I always read about the other people who received the award, never thought it would be me.”
Goodwin was nominated by several co-workers and present and past managers. “The recognition by so many people I respect and is very rewarding,” said Goodwin, “It really means a lot to know several people were impacted enough to submit the nomination. I don’t do anything for recognition or publicity, so sometimes I don’t know if people really notice, but they do.” Goodwin and his wife have two children, Anthony and Kayla, and live in Blue Springs, Mo. In addition to “Why Pink” and the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Goodwin’s are active contributors and volunteers to the Children’s Miracle Network, Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, Children’s Safe Drinking Water, Relay for Life, Shave to Share and Pajama Program.
